Play a recording faster or slower
Speed control is the feature that makes long recordings usable. An hour-long lecture at 1.75× is thirty-four minutes, and the pitch stays exactly where it was.
Change the speed
- Open a recording in the player.
- Tap the speed control.
- Pick from 0.5×, 0.75×, 1×, 1.25×, 1.5×, 2× and 3×.
- The setting is remembered for the next recording you open.
Which speed for what
- 0.5× and 0.75× — transcribing by hand, catching a mumbled word, learning a language, working out a musical phrase.
- 1.25× and 1.5× — the comfortable range for reviewing a meeting. Most people stop noticing within a minute.
- 2× — a lecture you have already sat through once.
- 3× — skimming for the part you are looking for.
Two things that go with it
Skip silence removes the pauses, which is worth another 10–20% on a meeting on top of whatever speed you choose. Marks let you jump between the moments you flagged rather than listening through to find them.

- Does it make voices sound squeaky?
- No. The pitch is held while the speed changes, so a voice at 2× sounds like the same person talking faster.
- Does the speed apply to every recording?
- The last speed you used is remembered and applied to the next recording you open.
- Is the file changed?
- No. Speed is a playback setting; the recording itself is untouched, and anything you share plays at normal speed.
