Start a recording with Siri
Two actions are registered with Siri and Spotlight as soon as the app is installed. You do not have to create a shortcut for them first.
What to say
- “Start a recording in Voice Recorder”
- “Record with Voice Recorder”
- “New Voice Recorder recording”
- “Open my Voice Recorder recordings” or “Show Voice Recorder recordings”
Use it in the Shortcuts app
- Open the Shortcuts app and create a new shortcut.
- Add an action and search for Voice Recorder.
- Choose Start recording or Open recordings.
- Give the shortcut a phrase of your own, or attach it to an automation — for example when you connect to the car.
What to expect
Siri opens the app and starts the take. The microphone cannot be held by anything outside the app, so the screen comes to the front for a moment even when the request came from your voice. Once it is running, the Lock Screen and the Dynamic Island take over.
FAQ
- Siri says it doesn't know the app.
- Open the app once after installing so iOS registers its actions, and use the app's exact name in the phrase. Check that Siri is on in Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Can Siri stop a recording?
- Stopping and saving is done from the Lock Screen or Dynamic Island buttons while the take is running.
- Does it work with the phone locked?
- Siri can start the app; the phone needs to be unlocked once for the app to come to the front and take the microphone.
