Record in the background while you use other apps

A recorder that stops the moment you check a message is not much use in a meeting. The app declares background audio, so a take keeps going while you do something else.

What keeps running

  • Locking the phone — recording continues, and the Lock Screen shows the elapsed time.
  • Switching to another app — notes, email, a browser, anything.
  • The screen turning itself off.
  • Putting the phone in a pocket, face down, or under a notebook.

Controlling it without unlocking

While a take is in progress, the Lock Screen and the Dynamic Island carry the running time and three buttons: mark, pause or resume, and save. Tap save there and the recording is stored — you do not have to open the app first.

What interrupts a recording

  • A phone call or a FaceTime call — the take pauses and is kept. Resume it when the call ends.
  • Another app taking the microphone, such as a voice memo in a messaging app.
  • The device running out of storage — below 60 MB free, the app saves the take rather than losing it.
  • The battery dying — the take is recovered at the next launch, with its marks.

FAQ

Does iOS ever kill a background recording?
Not while audio is actively being captured — that is what the background audio mode is for. It can end a paused recording that sits untouched for a long time, which is why a pause you do not intend to resume is better saved.
Can I record while playing music?
Starting a recording takes the audio session, so playback from another app stops.
Why does the orange dot appear at the top of the screen?
That is iOS telling you the microphone is live. It shows for any app that is recording, which is exactly as it should be.
