How to record a meeting on your iPhone

A meeting recording is only worth having if you can find the one minute that mattered. That takes two things: audio you can actually hear, and marks you drop while the meeting is happening.

Before the meeting starts

1. Open the app and swipe to the Meetings & lectures card — it turns on noise suppression and echo cancellation.
2. Put the phone flat in the middle of the table, screen up, with nothing on top of it.
3. Turn on Settings › Recording › Keep screen on if you want to watch the level, or just lock the phone and let it run.
4. Tap Start recording and check that the meter moves when someone speaks.

During the meeting

• Tap the mark button whenever something is decided. Each mark is a timestamp you can jump straight to later.
• Marks work from the Lock Screen and the Dynamic Island too, so the phone can stay face down.
• If someone joins on speakerphone, keep the iPhone away from the speaker to avoid a feedback loop.
• Raise the input gain from the adjust panel if a quiet person at the far end is hard to hear — you can do it without stopping.

Afterwards

1. Save the take with a name you will recognize — the date is already on it.
2. Open it and tap Transcribe to turn it into searchable text.
3. Tap a mark in the player to jump to that moment.
4. Tag it into a folder for the project, so next month's search finds it.

Ask permission

Recording laws differ by country and by state, and many workplaces have their own rule. Say out loud that you are recording, and get agreement, before you press the button.
