How to trim an audio recording on your iPhone
Every recording starts with somebody walking back to their seat and ends with somebody reaching for the phone. Trimming those off takes about fifteen seconds and makes everything afterwards — sharing, transcribing, merging — better.
Trim the ends
- Open the recording in the player.
- Tap Trim in the tool row under the waveform.
- Drag the left handle to where the audio should start and the right handle to where it should end.
- Tap play to hear the selection before you commit.
- Tap Save, then choose Save changes to replace the recording or Save as copy to keep the original.
Getting the edges right
- Leave about half a second of silence before the first word. A cut that lands on the word itself sounds clipped.
- Zoom in by pinching the waveform for a precise edge.
- Breaths belong to the sentence that follows them — cut before the breath, not after it.
- When in doubt, Save as copy. Storage is cheaper than a second recording session.
Trim or cut?
Trim keeps what is between the handles and drops the rest — the tool for tidying the ends. Cut does the opposite: it removes the selection and joins what is left, which is how you take something out of the middle. Both live on the same screen.
FAQ
- Does trimming lose quality?
- The audio is re-rendered at the same quality it was recorded at, so there is one generation of re-encoding for an M4A file and none at all for WAV. Trimming once is not something you can hear.
- Can I undo a trim?
- Not after you replace the original. Use Save as copy when you are not sure.
- Is trimming free?
- Yes. Trim and cut are free on purpose — they are the edit every recorder gives away.
