Where recordings are stored, and how to back them up
Every recording, transcript and mark is stored on the device, in the app's own Documents folder. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account behind any of it.
Finding them in the Files app
- Open the Files app.
- Tap Browse, then On My iPhone.
- Open the Voice Recorder folder.
- Copy, move or share files from there like any others.
Backups
- An iCloud backup includes the app's folder, so recordings come back when you restore a new iPhone.
- A computer backup through the Finder does the same.
- Check that iCloud Backup is on in Settings › your name › iCloud, and that you have room — audio adds up.
- For anything irreplaceable, keep a copy outside the phone as well: AirDrop it to a computer or save it to a cloud drive.
Managing the space
- Settings › General › Storage in the app shows what the library is using.
- The trash counts toward that total until it empties.
- WAV recordings are the big ones: about 350 MB an hour at 48 kHz stereo.
- Keep the transcript and delete the audio for anything you only needed the words from.
FAQ
- Are recordings synced to iCloud Drive?
- No. They are stored on the device and included in device backups; there is no live sync between iPhones.
- Can Novaz see my recordings?
- No. There is no account, no server and no upload. The only audio that ever leaves the device is a transcription request that iOS sends to Apple when your device cannot do the recognition itself.
- How do I move everything to a new iPhone?
- Restore the new phone from an iCloud or computer backup and the library comes with it. Otherwise, share the recordings you want to a cloud drive and import them on the new device.
