Restore a deleted recording
Deleting a recording does not erase it. It moves to the trash and stays there for 60 days, with the days remaining shown on each one.
Get a recording back
- Open the trash from the recordings list.
- Find the recording — each row shows how many days it has left.
- Restore it, and it returns to the list with its tag, marks and transcript intact.
Empty the trash on purpose
Deleting from the trash is permanent and immediate — the file is gone from the device. Do it when you need the space back now; otherwise let the 60 days run, which happens automatically at launch.
If the 60 days have passed
- Check an iCloud or computer backup made while the recording still existed; restoring the device brings the app's folder back with it.
- Check whether you shared it — a copy may be in a message thread, an email or a cloud drive.
- Check the Files app under Voice Recorder, in case a copy was saved there separately.
- There is nothing to recover from a server: recordings are never uploaded.
FAQ
- Does the trash use up my storage?
- Yes — the files are still on the device until they are permanently deleted. Settings › General › Storage shows the total the app is using.
- Can I change the 60 days?
- No, the window is fixed. You can always delete permanently sooner.
- Does deleting the app delete my recordings?
- Yes. Recordings live in the app's own folder, and iOS removes it with the app. Export anything you want to keep first.
