Import audio files into the app
Anything you import becomes an ordinary recording: it can be trimmed, merged, transcribed, tagged and searched exactly like a take you made in the app.
Import a file
- Open the recordings list.
- Tap the import option — there is a link at the bottom of the list as well.
- Pick one or more audio files from the Files app, iCloud Drive or a connected drive.
- They are copied into your library, with waveforms drawn as they arrive.
What it accepts
- Formats: M4A, MP3, WAV, AAC, CAF, AIF, AIFF and the audio in an MP4.
- Length: 1 second to 2 hours per file.
- Size: up to 2 GB per file.
- Anything outside those limits is skipped with a reason, and the rest of the batch still imports.
Getting files onto the iPhone first
- AirDrop from a Mac — the fastest way for one or two files.
- iCloud Drive, if the file is already on a computer.
- A cable and the Finder, or a USB drive through the Files app.
- An email or chat attachment: save it to Files, then import.
FAQ
- Does importing move the original?
- No, it copies. The original stays where it was.
- Can I import an MP3?
- Yes. MP3 files import and play normally. iOS has no MP3 encoder, so nothing exports as MP3.
- Why was my file skipped?
- Most often because it is longer than 2 hours, bigger than 2 GB, or a format iOS cannot decode — a video container without readable audio, for instance. The failure names the reason per file.
